…a masterclass in grant writing delivered in an accessible and engaging manner

Shane Huntington’s 3 hour grant-writing workshop was a tour de force in the fundamentals of crafting a successful research grant application. Shane shared a wide range of valuable insights distilled from extensive grant writing and editing experience. His talents in communication, honed over many years as a radio presenter, made the workshop engaging and his humorous anecdotes were well received. Who’d have thought that a grant writing workshop would be so enjoyable! There were key takeaways for researchers from a broad range of disciplines and also for those across the spectrum of grant writing experience. Thumbs up all round for this grant writing masterclass.
— Associate Professor Peter van Wijngaarden Deputy Director & Principal Investigator Research Integrity Advisor Centre for Eye Research Australia & Ophthalmology, University of Melbourne Department of Surgery
Following lockdown, our early career researchers and postgraduate students had lost confidence in giving in-person talks at conferences. Shane delivered a wonderfully stimulating and engaging workshop at La Trobe University that focused on the tools ECRs and students can use to effectively communicate their research. During the workshop, Shane made the audience feel comfortable and gave everyone space to share their stories and ask advice. Everyone expressed fantastic feedback on the workshop, and I have already seen the transformation of presentations from students. Thanks, Shane, for lighting a fire in the bellies of our staff and students!
— Dr Ebony Monson, School of Agriculture, Biomedicine and Environment (SABE), La Trobe University

I wanted to say that I found this to be a highly relevant workshop for us project officers and researchers. It has made me think about how I can structurally prepare my presentations to make them more purposeful for my audience and more engaging. I think this sort of training should be given to all early career researchers and research students – it would make for much more interesting conferences!

I found the workshop to be stimulating, engaging, thought provoking, useful and of a very high standard. Whilst I consider that I use many of these techniques already, there were many more ideas for me to add to my toolkit, and the conscious analysis of the techniques that I am already using was extremely helpful. It is always helpful to analyse how we work, in order to maximise the things we are doing well, and recognise and improve areas where we can do better. And I think that is exactly what this workshop achieved.

VU set out on ambitious journey in 2018 to create an immersive learning experience in central Footscray called Learning on the Edge. Together with Shane we developed The Science of living Well in Footscray. It was great working with Shane and the resulting panel discussion was thought provoking and Shane challenged speakers and audiences to think about what elements contribute to living well in Footscray. Many of the audience members lingered behind to continue the conversation. We hope to work with Shane again in the future and continue these events

Shane ran online mentoring training for the launch of our Statistical Society of Australia national mentoring program. We were so delighted with the workshop we asked him to run the training again the next year. Shane took the time to discuss our training needs with me, tailored training to suit our audience and incorporated a duty of care component in the mentor training sessions. Duty of care is something I have not seen offered in other mentoring training and was a component the mentors greatly appreciated. Shane creates a safe and friendly environment for participants to share their experiences, discuss concerns and ask questions. He ensures all voices are heard during training, effortlessly navigating conversations with groups of 20-30 participants. Shane keeps the training relaxed but informative. We will definitely seek training from Shane again in the future.
— Dr Karen Lamb, Senior Research Fellow - Biostatistics, Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, University of Melbourneurce

Dr Shane Huntington provided induction and skills training for our mentoring cohort over the course of two half days. The training was engaging, fun and appropriately adapted for our audience. Participants rated the workshop as excellent
— Kylie Gilmartin, Centre Manager Centre for Health Equity Melbourne, School of Population and Global Health, University of Melbourneource
Shane was the keynote speaker at our student-run 2023 Careers Expo and delivered a thought provoking presentation on Communication 101. Shane’s presentation was adapted to the range of research backgrounds and experience levels of attending students, such as Honours, PhD, and Masters by Research students. I truly believe that every research student would benefit from Shane’s communication training and I look forward to personally integrating some of his teachings into my PhD upcoming presentations
— Courtney McLean, Department of Neuroscience, Monash University
